Fiddle with your fuels all you like, but human powered is best. Quiet, quirky, creative, low impact and above all, sensible, the cargo bike is slowly winding its way into town and city streets all over the UK and beyond.
Check out the links pages for some of the cycle couriers operating in the UK at the moment and new ones are arriving all the time. To me, this is genuine direct action on one of the pressing needs of our time. It’s also adding colour and variety to urban streets.
For the past four years I’ve been a cycle courier and have ridden an assortment of bikes and pulled stupid weights round the streets of Brighton in trailers. I feel part qualified at least to offer my opinion on the pros and cons of these vehicles, but there are many I haven’t tried, so comments on the bikes/trailers included, plus others would be appreciated.
I want to say from the outset that the experiences included on these pages are the opinions of the person doing the talking and are not intended to be an A-Z of technical knowhow, so don’t take it all as gospel. If you’re thinking of moving to the light side and getting shut of the car in favour of lower impact transport, do more research, talk to more people and, most importantly, make up your own mind….
